Going Backless

by Jennifer

I have a new idea swirling around in my head this week.  Just add it to my transom windows and coffered ceilings daydreams.

Except this time it’s not an architectural detail but a furniture style.  I’ve never paid much attention to backless sofas but suddenly they’re all I can think about.

There’s something so effortlessly elegant and chic about them, like in this shared living/dining space.

I love the tufted detail and wheeled feet on this beauty.

These next two keep the furniture arrangements from feeling too heavy by maintaining an open line of sight into the adjacent rooms.

There is one thing, however, that all of these backless sofas have in common as far as function goes – they act as room dividers.
And this is the reason I have recently become fixated on them.  Our new family room is a big space and I’ve been struggling with what to do with it.  There’s one natural seating area centered around the fireplace, but then another space next to it that I just wasn’t sure what to do with.
Enter the backless sofa – it will keep the two spaces open to each other, provide lots of extra seating, a comfy place to lie and watch TV or read, and double sided seating so it literally merges the two seating areas together.
Where has the backless sofa been all my life??
I’m actually thinking of trying to make one from scratch.  I’ve built and upholstered enough furniture by now that I think it actually would be pretty straightforward.
Ambitious?  Probably.  Crazy?  Maybe.  Likely to happen?  Mmmmmm…I wouldn’t bet against it.  Stay tuned…

Meet Jen

I'm a design and DIY lover, decorator, modern home-maker, foodie, fashion enthusiast, and jill-of-all-trades when it comes to home improvement. I'm slowly but surely adding classic-contemporary style to my early 90's colonial home one inch at a time and I'm taking you along for the ride.

It's often messy - there are usually project remnants and toys strewn about - but the making of a home isn't always tidy work and I love showing you how you can make and style and organize your way to a home and a life you love!
