DIY Ornament Garland

by Jennifer 1 Comment

You won’t believe how easily and how cheaply you can make the shiny, glittery, festive ornament garland I showed you last week on one of the two mantles I decorated for Christmas this year.

It took me just four simple steps to get from nothing to this sparklefest.

  1. Buy about twenty tubes of metallic and glittered ball ornaments from the dollar store.  I bought three different sizes, which helps give the finished garland nice dimension.
  2. Pour them all out of their tubes into a gorgeous, sparkling pile on your floor or table.  Swim in them (optional).
  3. Cut a long length – I’d say 6-7 feet – of clear hanging wire, thin ribbon, or any thin-ish hanging instrument you wish to use.  I used thin satin ribbon.  String the first ball on and push close to the end of the ribbon, then tie a knot to secure it in place, leaving a few inches of ribbon hanging.  Continue stringing ornaments and pushing them to the end and you’ll see they naturally start to cluster on top of each other.
  4. When you finish, tie a knot at the other end and hang on your mantle!  I used Command hooks on either end and in the middle to give my ornament garland a draped look.

Pretty easy, right?  And It came in just over $20!

I have a feeling you’ll be seeing this little garland pop up in my holiday decor for a few years to come.  I love the way it catches the light from the Christmas tree and adds a whimsical but still classic touch to my Christmas decorations.

Meet Jen

I'm a design and DIY lover, decorator, modern home-maker, foodie, fashion enthusiast, and jill-of-all-trades when it comes to home improvement. I'm slowly but surely adding classic-contemporary style to my early 90's colonial home one inch at a time and I'm taking you along for the ride.

It's often messy - there are usually project remnants and toys strewn about - but the making of a home isn't always tidy work and I love showing you how you can make and style and organize your way to a home and a life you love!
