Basement Update – Almost Done!

by Jennifer

It’s been several weeks now since I shared an update on the basement with you (see my last progress report HERE) and I’m realizing now that while I explained the reason for my hiatus on the project over on Instagram, I didn’t say anything about it here. My original deadline for finishing and sharing the basement makeover with you was the week of December 18th, but I had to push that back because of a little furniture mishap.

Raymour and Flanigan is providing all of the new furniture for the space and when they called me to schedule delivery back in early December it turned out that the coffee table I’d ordered had arrived at their warehouse broken. The coffee table was a special order item and it was going to take a few weeks to get a new one delivered, so we decided to push the reveal to January so there was time to get a new table. As is so often the case, you get to witness the customer service level of a company when something goes wrong and Raymour and Flanigan’s was top notch when this happened. The people calling me to make sure we had everything worked out had no idea that I was working with the company on a partnership and would be writing about the whole experience and yet they couldn’t have been more apologetic and helpful in making sure everything was rectified to my satisfaction. Bravo, guys!

Since I didn’t have the 12/18 deadline hovering over me, I admittedly slowed my pace. I hosted family and friends through the month of December for my daughters’ birthdays and for Christmas festivities and generally enjoyed the time with everyone without worrying too much about the finishing touches in the basement. Well, now the time has come and I’ll be spending this week ticking off those final punch list items so I can share the finished room with you…….next week! Yahooooo!

Here’s a look at the to-do list I’ve been sharing with you all along, so you can get an idea of what’s been done already and what’s left. Items completed since the last time I shared are in red.

Assemble shelving
Trim shelving to become built-ins
Choose furniture
Choose artwork
Choose pillows and accessories
Choose paint colors
Paint walls
Purchase and hang TV
Install baseboard and wainscoting
Trim poles to look like columns
Install cabinet hardware

Caulk seams
Paint woodwork
Hang barn door
Replace recessed lights with LEDs
Stage furniture and accessories

As you can see, all I have left is to finish up the painting and do some zsushing and then I’ll be whipping my camera out to photograph the whole thing for you. Here are a few photos to show you progress, though I’ve kept these shots on the close side so there’s some small element of surprise next week!

Meet Jen

I'm a design and DIY lover, decorator, modern home-maker, foodie, fashion enthusiast, and jill-of-all-trades when it comes to home improvement. I'm slowly but surely adding classic-contemporary style to my early 90's colonial home one inch at a time and I'm taking you along for the ride.

It's often messy - there are usually project remnants and toys strewn about - but the making of a home isn't always tidy work and I love showing you how you can make and style and organize your way to a home and a life you love!
